Integrated Disc Transfer Systems

The Audio Archive builds high performance custom integrated phono disc transfer systems. We have taken the experience from our own state-of-the-art facility, and have cloned similar systems for organizations looking to perform state-of-the-art disc transfers in-house.

A typical system will consist of some or all of the following elements:

  • Turntable
  • Tonearm(s)
  • Phono cables
  • Custom integrated high-power microscope
  • Vibration isolation
  • Custom manufactured equipment supports
  • Phono preamplifier
  • ADC/DAC
  • Digital Audio Workstation

To keep costs reasonable, we do not act as a middle man in the sales process. Rather, you purchase equipment that we specify in detail directly from the manufacturer or supplier and have it shipped to The Audio Archive where we assemble, test and calibrate the final system.

We are a dealer for a few select manufacturers:

  • Simon Yorke Designs
  • Ortofon
  • Wavestream Kinetics

For these manufacturers, the products are modified and manufactured specifically for The Audio Archive to our specifications. The modifications enhance performance and functionality for preservation, restoration and re-mastering work. We generally sell our solutions only to professionals, institutions, libraries, record labels, and film companies.

Integration includes designing and manufacturing custom supports and mechanisms that bring the system together in a small footprint while delivering maximum performance. We test the fully assembled system in our facility, then carefully disassemble and ship the system to you.

As part of the delivery process, we will come to your location, unpack, re-assemble, test and calibrate the entire system. In addition, we recommend taking our two-day training course that covers the principles of handling, cleaning and playing back obsolete media for best results with your integrated system.

Below are some examples of the type of system integration we can do:

Completed system consisting of a Simon Yorke S10 CAT (Compact Archival Turntable), Minus K vibration isolation platform, and microscope with a digital head. The entire system is integrated with custom machined supports and mechanisms from The Audio Archive.

Side view of the microscope assembly which includes a Motic digital head, high-power illumination and fiber optic cable to keep all heat away from the disc.

The back side of the custom manufactured support for the isolator, turntable and microscope. All parts are CNC machined to very high precision and then hard annodized for protection and easy cleaning. We chose a black finish because it makes dust easy to see.

The microscope vertical positioning knob is dual-speed with coarse adjustment performed with the outer knob, and find adjustment performed with the inner knob.

This is a close-up view of the integration between the microscope rail and the vertical column. We use an expensive high precision rail which is used to build custom machine tools. The sliding rail is extremely rigid and does not bend or twist under the weight of the microscope. More importantly, the rail and the attached microscope assembly do not vibrate, providing clear images of the disc grooves. There are 4 sets of recirculating ball bearings that eliminate play between the slide and the microscope vertical column.

In order to obtain a small system footprint, it is necessary to custom mount the Simon Yorke S10 phono connection box on a custom shelf that attaches directly to the Minus K vibration isolation platform. The support shelf needs to be quite strong to resist forces when the tonearm cable is changed.

The phono connection box is located so that the tonearm cables are dressed properly and apply minimal forces to the tonearm.

A fully installed system at the client. The system is actually mounted on a rolling cart so that it can be moved between different studio locations. The Minus K vibration isolation platform is extremely effective in isolating both horizontal and vertical disturbances, making it possible to create a mobile solution without any performance degradation.

This system designed and integrated by The Audio Archive consists of

  • Simon Yorke S10 CAT (Compact Archival Turntable)
  • Minus K Vibration Isolation Platform
  • Ortofon SPU Classic N moving coil cartridges with custom styli geometries and dimensions
  • Graham Engineering IC-70 phono cables
  • Custom integrated microscope
  • Motic Digital Imager (for microscope)
  • High-power microscope illumination with fiber optic cable
  • Custom microscope stand, rail and adjustable column assembly
  • Wavestream Kinetics Archival Phono Stage
